Install time!!

Let’s install Ubuntu!

First a word of advice:

**************************************************************************

It’s always a smart idea to make a backup when you start messing around with installing operating systems 🙂

**************************************************************************

Bear in mind this is a proper install. There is something like Wubi (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer), which let’s you install ubuntu from within windows. Windows will actually emulate linux onto your computer. While this is very cool to see what ubuntu is, you won’t have the smoothness and speed you will experience when you do a clean install. If you just wan’t to experience the UI or see what linux is at the surface, you can also boot from the cd/stick itself. Many of it’s functions won’t work so i prefer to do a full install.

First thing to do is download the iso from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop .

Choose either 64 or 32 bit. You can fill out the survey if you want, then just click “take me to the download” at the bottom of the page. Your downoad will begin.

Wait for the file to complete. When it’s completed you have two options. Either burn the file to a cd or make a usb bootable stick. The first is straight forward, the second needs a bit of extra work. Make sure to format your stick to ensure a clean install.

To make the usb bootable stick you will need this program first: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/.

Download it and open. Select your ubuntu distro (it’s the same name as the iso file you downloaded) then select the station name from the stick.

For your convenience: this guy explains it very well: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Next step is making your computer recognise the stick or cd by selecting the booting options in your bios. The bios is the first thing that boots when your computer starts. To enter it, start up your computer en then press the designated button (mostly its the delete button). You navigate the bios with your arrow buttons. Got to “boot>boot device property” then select either cd/dvd or usb stick. To get it to the top of the list press “page up” or “+” till its at the top of the list. Press F10 to save. If you want it more visually, go to see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i16HtZnQvw.

Your pc will reboot and give you the option to boot from usb or cd .

Select the install option. Now it will take you through the install steps. While all the steps are mostly straight forward there is one option that needs your attention.

It’s the partition option. At a certain time ubuntu will give you the option to either erase everything or do “something else”. DO NOT SELECT EREASE EVERYTHING! This will wipe your windows install and all of your files. Select this option only when you have made a backup and don’t want windows any longer on your system! So instead select “something else” and configure your partitions manually. Normally you will see the partitions used for windows and maybe some others depending on ho your pc was configured when you bought it. Now, select the partition that is not your windows partition. It is normally the partition with the most space allocated to it. For instance if you have an 150GB hdd, windows normally will have 8GB or so and maybe there are some other partitons but ther will be a partiton with minimum 100GB or so. So select the largest partition and select “resize”, then enter the amount of space. Do this as follows

1. Select type “ext3”, mount point “/” alocate 15 GB

2. Select type “ext3” mount point “/swap alocate 5GB

3. Select type “ext3” mount point  “/home” alocate as much space as you want to as this is the directory where you will store all your files.

click the next button and of you go!

Congratulations on your first linux install!

The many flavors of linux.

distros

If you look up the term “linux” in your search engine you wont get a linux start page where you will be presented a download button. Linux comes in many “packages”. These are the so called distro’s. A distro is composed of the bare linux with GNU or KDE (the things necessary to make your computer work) and some software the composers thought to be important to you. Anyone can make his own distro. If you like to, you can create your own distro too. Just download the bare linux and some software you like to work with. Then redistribute it!

Some of the more popular distro’s are: Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Mageia (former Mandriva) and Opensuse.

There are more distro’s than these obviously. Most of them specifically designed for one purpose. Like Backtrack, mainly used by hackers.

But if you want to begin, start by checking out the ones on the previously given list. They are popular for a reason. They all stand for user friendly interfaces and easy installation.

Next time I’ll finally get you going with the install of one of my favourite distro’s Ubuntu.
